Payments to witnesses and pre-trial publicity are two major activities where the press can affect court cases. In this report, the committee investigated these cases and made several recommendations, including a stronger and more effective approach by the Press Complaints Commission, legislation prohibiting payments to witnesses and a strengthening of the Contempt of Court Act 1981 to curb pre-trial publicity.
