The first post-steampunk novel! And so it came to pass that the Baltimore Gun Club's successful 1864 launch of a manned projectile into outer space did initiate a worldwide "space race", bolstered by the industrial and technological advances developed over the course of three regrettable "great" wars, so that by the year of our Lord 1960 Earth men maintained a bustling way station upon our own moon and had founded not-insignificant colonies upon our closest celestial neighbors, Venus and Mars. Now, the Eurmerican Confederation is taking the next tentative step into the void, sending its first wave of great exploratory craft out, out, into our awesome, sometimes terrifying, solar system. Will what we find there, so relatively close to home, expand our understanding of mankind's place in the universe? Or will it destroy us?
A global space race, ignited by a 19th-century launch, propels humanity to colonize the Moon, Venus, and Mars by 1960, setting the stage for the Eurmerican Confederation's ambitious deep-space exploration. The narrative follows the initial wave of exploratory craft venturing into the solar system, driven by the technological advancements born from past conflicts. The central conflict arises from the unknown discoveries awaiting humanity in the void, posing a threat that could either expand our cosmic understanding or lead to our destruction. The story appears to be told from a third-person omniscient perspective, focusing on the grand scale of human achievement and the inherent risks of the unknown.
The premise of 'The Gods Inside the Stars - Space 1969' sets up a compelling alternate history where early technological leaps lead to a robust spacefaring civilization by the mid-20th century. The blend of steampunk elements with a classic space race narrative suggests a focus on grand exploration and the inherent risks associated with venturing into the unknown. The potential for both profound discovery and existential threat provides a strong thematic core. The narrative appears poised to explore humanity's place in the cosmos through the lens of this unique historical divergence.
