With this thought in mind these pages have been written, and with the hope that all who read will be brought into a clearer knowledge of and a deeper sympathy with this people who have been so often misrepresented and Whom I have learned to love so well. I have avoided everything in the form of bookish or literary style and tried to imagine myself telling my story to a company composed of men, women, and children who are anxious to learn more of a strange people in a far-away land.
