Jan Fingerland's book examines how the stories of women in the Bible have been understood over the centuries by rabbis, Christian theologians or various sects whose interpretations have been suppressed or forgotten over time. The author of the book asks what modern disciplines such as anthropology, linguistics or psychoanalysis can provide of the original content that remains hidden, or at least diluted, in modern translations. In addition Fingerland describes how the stories of biblical women have been interpreted by artists, filmmakers and writers.
