
Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 4: January 22, 1954 Hopper infestations occurred in Yellowstone, Golden Valley, Choteau, Hill, Sweet Grass, Beaverhead, Liberty, Cascade, Pondera, Park, Stillwater, Big Horn, and Phillips Counties. Greatest damage was to spring wheat, winter wheat, and alfalfa. A few localized very severe infestations occurred. Moderate range land grasshopper infestations, which caused damage to grazing lands, occurred in Ponder'a, Yellowstone, Big Horn, Beaverhead, and Jefferson Counties. Light to moderate mormon cricket (anabrps simplex) infestations occurred 1n restricted areas of Powell, Big Horn, Carbon and Choteau Counties. Scattered light to moderate army cutworm (chorizagrotis auxiliaris) ih festationswere recorded in Choteau, Sheridan and Roosevelt Counties. A very light, non-economic infestation occurred in Stillwater County. Damaging populations of aplant bug (labops hesperus) were observed in several crested wheatgrass fields in Cascade County. A western cetnch bug (blissus new species near occiduus) Two single localized infestations found: one confined to crested wheatgrass in Big Horn County; the other involving adjacent areas of crested wheatgrass, barley, oats, and spring wheat in Beaverhead County. The damage in both cases was severe. This insect was also observed in native range, primarily on S_tipa comata and Agropyron smithii where-it aused no apparent damage. Wireworm and false wireworm damage was reported in winter wheat from Ravalli, Fergus, Cas cade, Gallatin, Broadwater, Choteau, Liberty, Toole, Judith Basin, hill, blaine, Beaverhead, Lincoln, and Park Counties. Damage was reported in spring wheat from Sheridan, Roosevelt, Valley, and Fallon Counties. A single infestation in a potato field was reported from Flathead County.
