The book begins by tracing the emergence of wage labor, the origins of trade unionism and the history of Chartism. It then discusses the transformation of working class attitudes in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Subsequent chapters describe the emergence of Labour's various political wings, the growth and consolidation of trade union power, the impact of the first world war and the depression, and the effects of the second world war.
