Excerpt from The Tecoan, 1950 On August 22, 1929, East Carolina Teachers College was authorized to grant the Master of Arts degree. The first candidate received the degree four years later. From 1933 through August, 1949, one hundred fifty-five candidates were granted the Master of Arts degree. The largest number in any one year, fifty - five, were-granted during the academic year 1948 - 1949, including the 1949 summer session.
