When some students of history desire to test the historical claim that the Papacy in the Catholic Church is an institution founded by the Lord Jesus Christ and preserved from the Apostles onward throughout the Patristic foundations throughout history, unto the present day, many find themselves observing more discontinuity and continuity. The modern day Vatican with its grandiose architecture, political state regime, the elaborate government of the Roman curia, the College of Cardinals, the claims to ecclesiastical supremacy, universal jurisdiction, and the power to teach infallibly can all seem like a massive set of human constructions developed over time that have little to no relationship to what our Lord and Savior established with the 12 fisherman he made Apotles.
