Excerpt from The Livestock and Meat Situation: December, 1949 The million sows expected to farrow during the current December Mby period would be 23 percent more than farrowed two years ago, after the small 1947 corn crop. Then the number dropped to less than 8 million. Except for 1945, the 1950 spring pig crop promises to be one of the largest on record. In the spring of 1924 and of 1927 the number of sows farrowing were about the same as are intended for 1950, but the average number of pigs saved per litter in those years averaged about 1 pig less per sow than more recent numbers saved per sow farrowing.
