Excerpt from The Tobacco Situation, Vol. 50: October 1949 United States leaf tobacco exports in 1950 seem likely to be almost as large as the present estimate for 19149 of LL65 million-faunasdeal ar weight-(roughly equivalent of 525 million pounds farm-sales weight). The stocks of tobacco in many foreign countries are still low relative to consumption requirements. Although devaluation has increased the costs of United States tobacco in many countries usually taking substantial quantities, supplies of suitable tobacco are not available in other export areas to meet the import requirements of those countries° Also there is likely to be a tendency for leaf prices to rise in those producing areas which devalued along with the principal tobacco importing countries. Eca programs are a major factor affecting tobacco exports in the 19h9-50 fiscal year and are expected to continue to be of major importance in 1950-51.
