Excerpt from The Tobacco Situation: March, 1944 With sales of the 1993 crop practically completed, prices of all dark tobaccos have averaged considerably higher than the 1992 - 93 season average. The large consumption of snuff and plug chewing tobacco, and the improved out look for exports to Africa and the liberated dountries have contributed to strength of prices of dark tobaccos this season. The War Food Administration is also continuing the program of encouraging the diversion of low-grade leaf into the production of nicotine for insecticide purposes. Certain grades of dark tobaccos were reserved for this purpose and prices were established in keeping with market conditions.
