This text investigates the foundational principles of the acting process by breaking down the complex craft of performance into twelve manageable, systematic steps. Robert Benedetti, a seasoned educator and practitioner, utilizes a pedagogical framework that bridges the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. By integrating exercises derived from everyday life alongside analysis of established plays and television, the author provides a structured methodology for beginning students to develop their skills in character creation and critical analysis.

This work is regarded as a standard introductory text for undergraduate acting courses due to its accessible language and clear, modular structure. The framing suggests a focus on practical skill acquisition, making it a common resource for students seeking a foundational understanding of the craft.
