In the wake of the tragedy that the Piper left behind 8 year old Freidank is left with a broken leg and the grief of whole town resting upon him. Eventually, old Miss. Coens takes him under her wing and helps him deal with his survivors guilt and teaches him how to play the Pipe; a dream come true for Freidank since he fell in love with the Pipe the moment, he first heard the Piper play.
