"Stumbling into Modernity: Isaac Bashevis Singer's Cling to Tradition," is an examination of the writer's stories, novels and memoirs. While my agenda is to celebrate his work and argue for its inclusion among the best writers of the 20th century, I also critique some of the author's challenges in carrying the traditional customs of his birthplace from the isolated shtetls of Poland into the wonders of the modern cosmopolis, first Warsaw and then New York City.
