Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's five unmarried daughters. It is set in England in the early 19th century. A rich and eligible gentleman, Mr. Bingley, and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into the area. Bingley takes a liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, while Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society. He repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest daughter, Elizabeth Bennet. This immensely popular novel was first published in 1813. The characters are developed beautifully, revealing charming aspects of human nature. Austen is a brilliant, romantic writer.
