The author was a French doctor who was sent as part of a military mission to Serbia to help with a typhoid epidemic that was ravaging the country. He soon got caught up the retreat of the Serbians before the advancing Austrians and Bulgarians., This is the story of the harrowing retreat he made through the mountains of Albania and Montenegro to escape.
