A history of the activities of the Centralverein between 1893-1938 in Germany, including its attempts to fight antisemitism and to achieve legal protection for the Jews. Based on documents of the CV recently discovered in Moscow archives, focuses on changes which occurred in the organization's ideology, goals, and activities after 1933, when the last illusions concerning social and political rehabilitation had vanished. Although the CV and the Zionists did not agree on ideology, after 1933 many loyal CV members emigrated to Palestine. Among those who remained, some were active in the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland.
