In October 1874 Stuart Nichols, sometime of the Texas Rangers, left the Rocking Seven ranch with five wagons. The little party crossed the arid Llano plateau to bring back vital lead and powder for the soldiers fighting a bitter campaign against the Comanches and Cheyennes. They had a rugged trip. Sandstorms, treachery and the Indian raiders who were determined to snatch the stores for themselves, brought them near to disaster. The lead was hidden on the plateau and from then on Stuart, the only man who knew the cache, was a hunted man. The Indians were skilful, brave and merciless and in The Leaden Cache Noel Loomis has been able to tell the magnificent and thrilling story of this bitter fight for survival.
