The Rain Wild Chronicles follow the intertwined fates of humans and dragons as they struggle for survival and understanding in a world scarred by magical blight. The story centers on a group of scholars and dragon keepers who embark on a perilous journey up the treacherous Rain Wild River, seeking a legendary Elderling city rumored to hold the key to the dragons' future and the restoration of their kind. They face not only the environmental dangers of the river and the encroaching blight but also the political machinations and prejudices of the city-states they encounter, all while grappling with the mysterious and often dangerous nature of the dragons themselves.

The Rain Wild Chronicles are widely recognized for Robin Hobb's signature intricate world-building and character development, particularly in her nuanced portrayal of the bond between humans and dragons. Readers often praise the immersive quality of the narrative and the emotional depth of the characters as they navigate a world recovering from magical devastation. The series is noted for its slow-burn pacing, allowing for a deep exploration of its themes and the gradual unfolding of its complex plot. While some may find the initial setup deliberate, the overarching narrative arc and the unique speculative elements involving dragons and their history are frequently highlighted as compelling reasons to engage with the saga.
