This publication was originally written by the American Road Builders Associattion subcommitte on Lime Stabilization and was published in 1959 as ARBA Technical Bulletin 243 and reprinted in 1962. In 1965 the bulletin was revised extensively by the staff of the National Lime Association. Later revised editions were published in 1969, 1972, 1976, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1991. To date, about 80,000 copies of this manual have been distributed, indicating its popularity. With lime stabilization continuing its steady growth, it is believed that this construction manual will be of special value to engineers preparing lime stablization construction specifications; to contractors in their bid prepartions, job planning, and actual construction; to project inspectors; and to civil engineering students. Besides covering the best construction practices, this publication also discusses the pros and cons of the alternative construction steps and equipment.Following the introduction (Chapter I), the bulletin comprises two main parts in order to facilitate quick or detailed perusals. The first part (Chapter II) covers the construction steps sequentially in brief form. The second part (Chapter III and IV) covers the same steps in greater detail, including all significant modifications, alternatives, and comparative conclusions. The Appendix includes a specification for hydrated lime for soil stabilization, a list of other pertinent specifications, and also an extensive bibliography on lime stabilization, with particular emphasis on construction practices.
This manual investigates the standardized methodologies and best practices for utilizing lime stabilization in soil construction projects. The text, developed by the National Lime Association, provides a comprehensive framework for engineers, contractors, and inspectors to ensure structural integrity in road and foundation work. It synthesizes decades of industry experience into a structured guide for project planning, specification writing, and field execution.
