The text of the Psalms contained in this book is that which the General Synod of the Church of Ireland, in its session of 1921, ordered to be printed in all subsequent editions of the Book of Common Prayer according to the use of the Church of Ireland. It is a revision of the translation by Coverdale in the Great Bible of 1539-41, adopted by both Houses of the Convocation of Canterbury, in the year 1920. This revision was carried out on very conservative principles; and in a considerable number of the Psalms the text has been altered hardly at all. Table of Contents include: Table of Proper Psalms for Sundays and Holy-Days, Table of Psalms for Certain Occasions, Selection of Chants, The Canticles and the Psalter
This volume presents the authorized liturgical text of the Psalms as mandated by the General Synod of the Church of Ireland in 1921. The work serves as a formal record of the ecclesiastical decision to adopt a specific revision of the Coverdale translation, originally found in the Great Bible of 1539-41. By documenting the conservative principles applied during this revision, the text provides a historical snapshot of early 20th-century Anglican liturgical standards and the preservation of traditional scriptural phrasing.
What You Will Find
Scope Limits
Scholars and liturgical historians view this text as a primary source for understanding the evolution of the Church of Ireland's prayer book tradition. Readers frequently note the conservative nature of the editorial changes, which prioritize the preservation of the classic Coverdale cadence over modern linguistic updates.
