What Is a Doula? A Doula supports, encourages, motivates and inspires a woman through the most momentous moment of her life, that of giving birth, improving the experience and birthing outcomes for both the mother and the baby. Doulas provide information and support to mum, dad, family and friends and they help the mother to make informed decisions about maternity care. Doulas support different kinds of births and different parenting choices and they work alongside midwives and doctors but not in clinical roles, more like your dedicated friend. Birth doulas provide continuous support through pregnancy, labour and birth and the immediate postnatal period. Postnatal doulas provide flexible practical and emotional support postnatally for families in their own homes.
