The deaths from these causes during the three preceding years were: 1870. 1871. 1872. Average per annum, 274, being 119 less than the mortality from the same causes in 1873. The ratio of deaths from these 'causes to the population of the respective years was only 11 less in 1870 than in 1873. The per centage to the total mortality of each year was 7.79 in 1870;'4.40 in 1871; 5.04 in 1872; and 6.96 h1 1873. According to the estimated population of the city, the deaths reported from cholera alone, during the year, were 0.838 in 1,000, or, one in every 1,192 of the population. With the excess of mortality from the above diarrhoeal diseases over the average from the same causes in the three preceding years, added, the mortality was 1.320 in 1,000, or, one in every 757 of the inhabitants. In 1866, the deaths from cholera, exclusive of those reported from cholera morbus and other acute diarrhceal causes, were 2,028. The boundaries of the city, within which these deaths took place, then embraced only seven square miles, and at the taking of the United States census in 1870, contained 161',349 inhabitants. The population of some of the wards, however, was greater in 1866 than in 1870, as the demand for business houses had, in the meantime, compelled the occupants of dwellings to seek homes in other parts of the city, or in suburbs which have since been annexed.
