Perhaps you would like to hear a little more about Germanus. One day in one of his journeys he overtook some poor men who had been away to distant places to work, and were returning home. As they journeyed they came to a stream which they had to cross--for there were no bridges in those days--and one of them, an old man, was not strong enough to carry his pack through the stream. So Germanus first of all took his pack and carried it over, and then he came back and fetched the poor man himself. When he was at Eavenna, the empress sent him a large silver dish full of very rich food; but he gave it to his servants, and kept the silver dish, that he might sell it and give the money to the poor. And he sent the empress a barleyloaf, such as he was accustomed to eat, upon a wooden dish, which she took great care of and ordered to be enchased with gold. One day at Ravenna, while he was talking to the other bishops, he said, " My brethren, I recommend my passage to your prayers. Methought I saw our Saviour this night, who gave me provision for a journey, and told me it was to go to my native country, and to receive everlasting rest." The bishops tried to persuade him that this meant that he should get to his home at Auxerre in safety, but he said, No; he knew what land God promised his servants, and in a few days he died.
