Sam Hunt, a one-quarter Navajo roughneck, besieged by midlife crisis, leaves the Louisiana bayou and moves back to his old hometown of Aztec, New Mexico. During Hunt's move back to Aztec, in the fall of 1985, he meets Sera, a beguiling young creature with powers far beyond his understanding. Hunt is hexed, but he has also been cursed by Lina, a young woman he met only once in 1970. Hunt is trapped between these two creatures of a different age.Sera entrances Hunt, and he is hexed into servitude as Sera's chauffeur, transporting her deep into the unknown, deep into an alternate reality. Strange adventures ensue. Eventually, Hunt is led into a bizarre reality where he finds a book his mother had given him as a child. He reads "Act One" of the play and has visions of his sovereignty as the monarch of the Kingdom of Grim Gray. However, his imaginings are only a trap, to imprison him in the lost city of Carcosa. But this new gloomy domain is much more desolate than the strange world of Ambrose Bierce. Hunt's entire universe is suspect, twisted, dark, as he transports The Dark Queen, Sera, deeper into the night of the unknown.
