The term 'Irish English' refers to varieties of English spoken in the island of Ireland. In the broadest sense it encompasses varieties which share a number of pronunciation and grammatical features as well as vocabulary items which serve to adequately delimit them from varieties of English beyond Ireland (Hickey 2012). The study of varieties of English has, in the last few decades, seen a great expansion in publications covering English world-wide. In this global context, Irish English has found its place and has been accorded due research attention, see Kirkpatrick (ed., 2020), Filppula, Klemola and Sharma (eds, 2017), Hickey and Vaughan (eds, 2017), Ball and Mesthrie (eds, forthcoming), Bolton (ed., forthcoming), Hickey (ed., forthcoming) and Moore and Montgomery (eds, forthcoming) as examples.
This volume investigates the linguistic characteristics, historical development, and regional variations of the English language as spoken on the island of Ireland. Raymond Hickey, a prominent scholar in the field of contact linguistics and varieties of English, compiles research to define the parameters of Irish English. The text utilizes a framework that balances historical diachronic analysis with contemporary sociolinguistic observation to distinguish Irish varieties from other global English dialects.
