Now, Beth Eves was running and hiding on her own as well, from everyone, including who and what she is. While keeping a low profile in a small country town, she keeps to herself and tries to keep the town's people at arms length. She can't allow anyone to find out who she really is. No matter what, she refused to be responsible for other's lives again. She wouldn't be the cause of anyone's death and hopefully not her own as well. But when she accidentally runs Jason Davis off the road, Beth finds her control slipping, from the attraction that ignites instantly between them. Trying to keep her distance from her handsome neighbor, she finds that hard to do, when he keeps popping up. Jason knows she is afraid of something. But it's the fire in her eyes, which makes him want to know everything including her secrets. He can tell she has been hurt in the past, yet it's the absolute terror that keeps consuming her eyes that has him promising Beth, to help keep her safe. And promising himself to keep her forever.
