Excerpt from New Bedford Five Cents Savings Bank: Incorporated April 18, 1855, Organized May 5, 1855, Opened May 26, 1855 Opportunity presenting itself through which facts and conditions existent in New Bedford in the Fifties came to the writer's attention, it seemed wise to take note of them as well as of their bearing on the early days of the City and the New Bedford Five Cents Savings Bank, and search of the records showed much information could there be gathered of the progress and changes brought by the passing years. In the pages which follow, the attempt has been made to present the information thus revealed in a way that will be of interest to those of today, and perchance of value to the generations to follow; and if this is accomplished - though but in small measure - then the time and labor involved will have been well spent.
