AFTER the two former dreams concerning Christian, and Christiana his wife, with their children and companions pilgrimage from the city of Destruction, to the region of Glory; I fell asleep again, and the visions of my head returned upon me. I dreamed another dream, and behold, there appeared unto me a great multitude of people, in several distinct companies and bands, traveling from the city of Destruction, the town of Carnal Policy, the village of Morality, and from the rest of the cities, towns, villages, and hamlets that belong to the valley of Destruction: For so was the whole country called that lay on this side of the wicket-gate, which the man Evangelist shewed unto Christian; and so was also all that country called, that was situated wide of the gate on the right-hand, and on the left extending itself along the walls and borders of that region, wherein lay the way to the heavenly country. This was the name of that country, even the valley of Destruction.
A vast multitude of souls embarks on a spiritual pilgrimage from the desolate Valley of Destruction towards the heavenly country. The narrative follows distinct groups traveling from various locales within this blighted region, all seeking salvation after the initial allegorical journeys of Christian and Christiana. The primary conflict lies in their collective struggle against the spiritual perils and temptations inherent in their world, with the ultimate goal of reaching the heavenly country, a stark contrast to their origins.
This work presents itself as a continuation of the allegorical tradition, offering a vision of a multitude undertaking a spiritual pilgrimage. The narrative structure, framed as a dream, allows for exploration of various paths and challenges faced by souls seeking salvation from a land of spiritual peril. The text likely appeals to readers familiar with and appreciative of classic Christian allegories, offering a complementary perspective to earlier works in the genre. Its anonymous authorship and dreamlike quality suggest a focus on symbolic representation of spiritual truths and the diverse ways individuals approach their faith journey.
