Caught somewhere between Mash and Catch 22, this is the story of a squad of young soldiers coping with their time in America's first endless war. There were buried mines, deadly booby-traps, sudden firefights and a largely unseen enemy. But perhaps the bigger threat was their own people-the cadre above, willing to sacrifice lives in a war that could not be won, but just might last long enough for them to climb the next step on the ladder. Then there were the interfering politicians trying to fight a guerilla war from their cozy Senate Chambers by prescribing how you should fight, who you could shoot, and when and where you could bomb known enemy positions. Like pawns in an insidious game of chess, these boys were mere pieces. And everyone who humped the bush in Vietnam lost pieces of themselves. Some just lost bigger ones.
