Self-help. Just whispering the words conjures up images of desperate people, inadequate souls or those lost in their own lives. But there is much more to seeking self-help than that. For starters, all of the above perceptions of self-help seekers are inherently negative. They are the kinds of things said by those who are either ignorant to the concept or too bullish to think that they need it. The thing about self-help is this: who would not want to better themselves, increase their capacity to love, enjoy life or simply be happier? Given the chance - or the realisation that this is a good thing - everyone would seek self-help. Perhaps the problem with the genre which self-help books cover is the huge amount of new-age hocus-pocus which goes with some of the guides. Now, not all of these books rely on the reader to put their faith in a mysterious universal force which can manifest their desires should they ask it to on an ever-so polite way. But a lot do. You may have heard or read about the Law of Attraction or the Law of the Universe (both referring to the same thing) or you may even have read The Secret, a book mainly about positive thinking but which is wrapped up in the Law of Attraction and a myriad of hard-to-swallow beliefs which it claims, when accepted, can change the course of your whole life just by believing. While referencing such publications, this book aims to cut through the mysticism and far-out sentiment. Instead it will concentrate on the science of positive thinking - how the mind works and what techniques can have an effect on it - to help you become happier, focused on success and more confident and positive. What is striking is that a scientific-based psychology book or a book about the Law of Attraction all advocate the use of very similar techniques in order to reshape the way you think. The reason for that is simple. The basic, raw information they use comes from the same research and knowledge. And, secondly, the techniques work. ABOUT TH
