Indian Sarsaparllla (asclepiadei.--Prescribed, like Sarsaparilla, as a demulcent, mild alterative, and diuretic. Its virtues reside in a volatile oil, and a crystallizable principle (Hemidesmine'). An Infusion and Syrup are official in the P. I. HIBISCI ESCULENTUS. Edible Hibiscus; Okro.--The fruit of Hibiscus esculent us (malvace:), cultivated in India. Recommended as emollient, demulcent and diuretic, similar to Althaea. The fruit is known as "Ladies' Fingers," and is largely used by both Europeans and natives. A Decoction, 3 in 2o, is official in the P. I. Dose--3 to 6 ounces, or ad libitum. The steam from this may also be inhaled for cough, etc.--Ph. Ind. i., 21o. HIRUDO AUSTRALIS, I. & C. A. Australian Leeches.--Used in the Australian colonies in place of European leeches. Hirudo Medicinalis.--The Leech. Twelve species of Indian Leeches, six of which are said to be venemous and six useful, are described in Sanskrit writings.--Dey. They are found during the wet season in Bengal, the Punjab, and the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. HOANG NAN. The bark of Strychnos Gaultheriana from China recommended for hydrophobia, leprosy and other skin diseases, contains Strychnine and Brucine. HOLARRHENA. Conessi or Tellicherry Bark; Kurchi.-The bark oi Holarrhena antidysenterica (apocynacee), a shrub common in India. Indigenous to the tropical Himalaya. The bark contains an alkaloidal principle which has been named concessine and kurchiene. The bark has been confounded with that of VVrightia tinctoria, which is comparatively inert, but the former is of a dirty white or buff colour, while the latter is reddish-brown and smooth.
