Sustainable development has been proposed as a new policy paradigm that will help our society face the challenges of overpopulation and excessive consumption of planet resources. The book begins with a primer on sustainable development-what the term stands for, where it comes from, and what we have learned about it. It also includes eight case studies from different parts of the world that illustrate different approaches to sustainable development. The lessons learned from these approaches and other experiences of nongovernmental organizations are then used to build a model for structuring future sustainable development initiatives.
