Excerpt from Mason's Monthly Illustrated Coin Collector's Magazine, and Coin Price Current, Vol. 1: September, 1884 In paper currency alone Mr. Schayer was deeply concerned, and accumulated such a vast heard of the postal and fractional currency of the United States, that the amount in dollars became so great that he was compelled to sell and engage in the cheaper sort, viz., the paper currency of the Confederate States and at this day he has stored away over a million dollars of the C. S. A's promises to pay. During the temporary excitement of a couple of years ago, in Europe, that sent Confederate bonds up from twenty-five-cent curiosities to twelve or fifteen dollar bonds (of a thousand dollars each), Mr. Schayer reaped a golden harvest. In conclusion, we would add that the subject of our sketch has handled some of the largest cabinets of coins in the country, including those of Col. Adams, Colburn, Appleton, Freeman, Stetson, and Abby. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
