Excerpt from A Catalogue of New and Rare Roses for 1883, Vol. 7 The descriptive catalogue of roses, by ellwanger 85 barry, of the Mount Hope Nurseries, Rochester, is one of the most complete catalogues of the kind that has appeared on either side of the Atlantic, for the perfect selection of varieties which it exhibits. A vast multitude of names and a bulky list are carefully avoided, and a limited number of the finest out of the thousands that have appeared before the public, are here presented, inferior varieties being thoroughly weeded out. This will prevent much embarrassment and annoyance to purchasers in making their selections. The fact that at least one-half of the best and most brilliant sorts in cultivation have been introduced within the past fifteen years, indicates the impor tance of keeping well up to the times, which the extensive correspondence of Messrs. E. B. Enables them to accomplish. Besides the descriptions, additionalinterest is given by the names of the originators and the dates of introduction whenever this information could be obtained.
