Fourteen is about the real-life experiences of a young girl named Scottie growing up in a big family in Pasadena, California. The year is 1958, and the age of Scottie is fourteen. Young readers of today will be excited to find both similarities and differences in their experiences of becoming a teenager to those of Scottie. Fourteen is a diary-style book, and through Scottie's interactions with her friends from school, her many sisters and brothers, and her strict father and busy mother, Fourteen's author has made it possible for the reader to feel like she is herself fourteen years old and is growing up in the 1950s rather than the twenty-first century.
