Preterm infants are surviving in increasing numbers and in better heatlh, and yet public knowledge is still limited. This book aims to bring together up-to-date knowledge and experience of paediatricians and psychologists. The book describes how premature babies differ from full-term babies -- in physical appearance, behaviour, and medical treatment required. Much of the book is devoted to the feelings and needs of parents -- their anxieties, the problems of parenting in a hosptial environment, and the needs of their other children.Practical suggestions are offered on breast-feeding, preparing to leave hospital, and looking after the baby during the first weeks at home. The long term implications of premature birth -- follow-up visits, the prospects for good health and development, and the possibility of handicaps -- are outlined. High risk pregnancies are considered, and guidance given for parents whose baby dies.
