It gives me very great pleasure and honor to now present Judge William H. Hunt, of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals, who will deliver to you the "Annual Address," upon the subject, "The Influence of the Profession." THE ANNUAL ADDRESS, "THE INFLUENCE OF THE PROFESSION." By Hon. William H. Hunt, United States Circuit Judge. Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen of the Association: The honor of addressing you is greatly appreciated by me; especially am I glad to be here at this time, when as brethren we will agree that our vision should be clarified, remembering that the relation of the lawyer to society and the state should make him the leader in helping men to a better understanding of the forces that must be aroused, if we would preserve the true spirit of the law and apply true basic ideas to the concrete data which are ever changing in their masses of details, as goes on the development of society. Amid these struggling masses, interests become diverse, complexities multiply, and the task of the law becomes one of "delimitation and determination." It avails but little for the various Bar Associations to gather in annual meeting and hear views in criticism or support of statutory legislation that has been put upon the books, unless the discussions are followed not only by united effort to extirpate the unwise and to preserve the wise, but also to prevent the spread of a feeling that ours is a profession that falls short of its ideals.
