The Association was called to order in the United States Courtroom, at 10 o'clock a. m., by the President, B. R. Davidson. Carroll Armstrong was called to the Chair, and the President delivered his opening address. President's Address. Gentlemen Of The Arkansas State Bar Association: It is said of Samuel Clemens that his wife expostulated with him about spending his time on light, humorous writing, when he was capable of better things. When he asked her for a subject, she suggested "The Life of Christ." The prince of humorists at once replied, "imagine the title page, 'The Life of Christ, by Mark Twain.'" When I assert that the influence of the bar on the rising generation is greater and better than that of any other professional calling, the assertion may occasion in the minds of some a feeling kindred to that caused by the suggested title page of the proposed book. You have met for the eighth time as a State Bar Association. You have suggested many important changes in our statutes, some of which have been acted on. You have discussed many of the important questions of the day, and the influence of the body has been to promote fraternal feeling, to elevate the standard of the bar, and to elevate the standard of the gentleman, both inside and outside of the profession. But while our lives may be made pleasanter, ambition to accomplish good be inspired and our characters be exalted by these annual meetings, it is in our daily contact with men, in the practice of our profession or the administration of the law, and in the discharge of our duty as citizens we exert the greatest influence.
