Not illustrated. 1921 Excerpt:...Mr. President, it may be proper that I should state something with reference to some experience that I have recently had as a member of the International Bar Association, a special committee appointed with reference to the education of the members of the bar. I attended a meeting of that committee in New York. There were members of the bar present from different states, and that committee heard addresses and statements by representatives of the different colleges as well as those representing different views on this question of legal education. They sat for two days and listened to discussions of that kind from every source, and from the strongest representatives of all the different views. It developed there that there are law schools and law schools, that there are law schools merely for profit, and that if they are permitted to turn out their students freely that the profession would become overwhelmed with a lot of men who are simply getting into it for commercial purposes and without reference to the high ideals that come from the kind of education that the lawyer ought to have. There are law schools in the city whose business is to set simply at night and to have men who have no particular education coached and drilled so they can answer a series of question and pass a legal examination before an examining board. That is the complaint that is being made from all sections of the country. The effort has been made in the American Bar Association and the law school association to fix a standard that would meet that everywhere, without making it so hard that the men of moderate means and even the man with limited education would have an opportunity to enter the profession, provided he had the required ability.
