Having won the "most valuable player" award in the International Baseball Tournment, Chip Hilton is invited to accompany the Parkville Bears as their dugout guest as they fight for the pennant against the Hedgetown Mules. Chip makes friends with some of the professional players and enemies with others, but when the Bears go into an inexplicable tailspin in the last week of the season, it's Chip, from his vantage in the dugout who's able to solve the baffling puzzle of what's happened to get the team off-track.
