It means, too, if we consult the lexicographers," a forest-road, a forest-elephant, a jackall, etc.;" but above all it is the name of those theosophical works which are the precursors of the Upanishads, and are held in the greatest awe by the Hindu authorities.151 If a learned Hindu were IJ1 Manu, IV. 123, for instance, applies the same injunction to the termination of a lecture of an Aranyaka as to that of a whole Veda: 9TfTRTVn 11141 f 17 asked the meaning of Aranyaka, he would certainly first point to the sacred works which hear this name, and then refer to the meaning" forester," just as, I suppose, a European questioned on the sense of the word" Bihle," would first say that it means "Testament," and then remember its etymological sense, "book." Yet Panini merely speaks of Aranyaka," the forester." Professor Miiller has pointed out ttiat Panini does not mention the principal meaning of Aranyaka, hut expresses himself thus (page 33!)): " Whether Panini knew the Aranyakas as a branch of sacred literature is uncertain. Although he mentions the word that Panini could have known this...
