For years Paula and her father have dreamed and talked about trying to find the lost city of Atahualpa. And now, without warning, Paula is taken out of school and finds her dream come true. Together with her parents and Finn, the photographer, she travels to South America to begin the journey. But as they descend towards the jungle Paula senses that all is not quite as it should be. Why is her father so moody and impatient? And why does he insist that the expedition is being shadowed by sinister enemies? Paula realizes that her loyalty to her father is not enough - she must discover for herself what the truth is about the journey she is making.
Paula’s long-held dream of discovering the lost city of Atahualpa transforms into a tense expedition when her father’s erratic behavior suggests hidden dangers. Paula accompanies her parents and a photographer named Finn into the South American jungle, expecting a grand archaeological discovery. As the group penetrates deeper into the wilderness, the physical isolation and the humid, dense environment amplify the growing psychological strain between the characters. The narrative follows Paula’s perspective as she attempts to reconcile her childhood admiration for her father with his increasingly suspicious and paranoid actions regarding their supposed enemies.
Readers frequently highlight the effective way the author builds suspense through the protagonist's growing unease rather than relying on external action sequences. Discussion often centers on the psychological complexity of the father-daughter relationship as the expedition progresses. Critics note that the setting serves as a mirror for the internal turmoil experienced by the characters throughout the narrative. The pacing is often described as deliberate, allowing the reader to experience the mounting pressure alongside Paula. Many readers appreciate the grounded approach to the adventure genre, which prioritizes character development over sensationalized tropes.
