Please see my author page for updated 3rd edition with new lessons. This reader was written for medical students and other healthcare workers who are studying Mandarin Chinese. The lessons are most beneficial for first and second year medical students, and focus on history taking and communicating. The course is structured similarly to how schools teach students the medical interview. Although each school may teach the components of a medical history in a different sequence, the content remains the same. Each lesson in this reader can be taught independently from the others, so that Medical Mandarin course instructors can order the lessons in a way that is best for their students. Each lesson comprises several incomplete patient histories in dialogue; through the conversation between patient and physician, students can learn how physicians ask routine questions as well as pick up important medical vocabulary. Each incomplete history is based on the lesson topic rather than a medical condition or disease; for example, dialogue suited for the social history will appear minimally in the past medical history lesson. However, there are also some patient histories spread out through several lessons that can be combined to form a more complete history. All of the patient histories presented have been selected so that students will learn the most common medical conditions and diseases and the associated vocabulary.
