Co-operation of Authors and Publishers After an address before the Public Education Association of Philadelphia, the suggestion was made that there should be established in that city a censorship of children's books. In the light of the above statement, surely there is sufficient reason for such action. As a contribution to this end, our movement has established such friendly relations with reputable publishers and authors that we are able to offer advice when it will count most, that is, before the book is printed. During the past year, innumerable conferences have been had both with authors and publishers as regards books yet to be written or published. Only recently I learned of a series of stories for boys on the present European War that were to be published as a Boy Scout series. When the publisher understood that the title of such a series was objectionable to our movement, he immediately changed it, eliminating also from the manuscript of the first volume such references to Boy Scouts as were offensive to us. Menace of the Cheap Boy Scout Story Books However, we are not always so fortunate. There are some pub That is the way many publishers have been doing for the past five years. In this time not less than 75, perhaps as many as 100 Boy Scout story books have been published, at least 80 per cent, of them grossly misrepresenting our principles and, in many cases, judging from complaints more and more constantly received, working passing, if not permanent detriment to our boys.
