Richard Huxtable sits studying the prophetic face of the white witch Mabel Black as she slowly weaves a pattern of life that lies before him. When Mabel tells Richard that she sees a trip in his near future, her eyes become wide and circular revealing the fright that she feels for his future. "You should not take this trip, is all," she tells Richard, but the determined young man foolishly goes on his trip to Setonwood to interview for a job as jack-of-all trades at the estate of Claire Seton.
