this is more than a homecoming is a collection of poetry that goes through the event of introspection; followed by unpacking, unlearning & then healing - the good, the bad, and the ugly. allowing the space, time and vulnerability of bringing the darkest parts of yourself to the light, where everyone can see, where you can see. it touches on abuse- both physical & psychologically. it visits the heartbreak that comes from unrequited love. it centers heavily around the topic of grief - not only for people we lost to death but for people, places, and things that are still living or existing. for ourselves, as we tend to do while trying to find our footing in the world. all of these happenings in my life, lead up to me making the decision to leave my birthplace, again. to return to my second home - the homecoming. through every lesson in life and the turmoil that comes with it, somehow, i preserve my softness. i preserve my unwavering will to believe in good love and to be loved. i learn to trust, love and rely on myself. from this, i birth a new me, a new home within myself, a loving, soft, dreaming, passionate, unconditional home. more than a homecoming. i am walking into my new home with acceptance, gratitude, and graciously remaining soft in an environment that would righteously turn anyone's heart to stone. all the while being black.
