Excerpt from Clipper Ships of America and Great Britain, 1833-1869 Manhattan was the scene of the next American Shipbuilding venture, when the lawyer - captain Adrian Block built the 16-ton Onrust to te place the galiot Tiger, when that ship caught fire and burned to the water's edge while standing by, in 1613, for a cargo of furs. While the ship was building the traders erected rude winter quarters at What is now No. 39 Broadway, and when spring came round again the Onrust was launched in the waters of the Upper Bay. She was little more than a yacht - 38 feet on the keel, on deck, and on the beam - but before going home she explored the coasts of New England and Dela ware Bay, and in 1616 Captain Hendrickson discovered the Schuylkill River in her, and explored nearly the entire coast from Nova Scotia to the Capes of Virginia.
