I started out as a songwriter, when I was 12 years old! It was later on that I discovered poetry. I read one of those how to books on writing poems. After that, I read any resource I could find on poetry. It was easy to get books. I worked at the US Senate at the time and one of the perks was that we could check books out of the Library of Congress. Plus, there were lots and lots of bookstores too in and around Washington, DC where I was living at the time. I went from Washington to graduate school and then to western North Carolina. This is the area where I’m known as a poet. Often I walk into a place and people go “There’s the poet.” This book is about what it’s like to live as a poet. It’s not just a profession! If you are a writer, a poet, then it affects your world, your head, your heart and those around you. No matter what you do to make a living, you are a poet through and through all day, all night. Living your life as a poet is almost like writing a poem: you take words, thoughts and organize them to fit a certain structure. For me, poetry = life!
