Carnival in Venice. Life was a gay charade for the exiled, disinherited Sir Harvey Drake, but it was a serious matter for Paolina, finding herself an orphan and alone in the world after a shipwreck off the coast of Italy. Reluctantly, she agreed to Sir Harvey's plan to sell the jewels he had salvaged, outfit themselves finely, and make a rich marriage for her. The Duke of Ferrara did not have marriage in mind, and Sir Harvey had to teach him a lesson. Then on to Venice where Paolina at last found an acceptable suitor. The duke, bent on revenge, was in hot pursuit, and not even the gaiety of Carnival time or the prospect of a life of luxury could quell Paolina's fears for the safety of her fellow-adventurer.
After a shipwreck leaves her orphaned and destitute, Paolina enters a precarious arrangement with the disinherited Sir Harvey Drake to secure her future through a wealthy marriage. Paolina and Sir Harvey navigate the social hierarchies of Italy, utilizing salvaged jewels to fund their entry into high society. Their objective is to secure a stable marriage for Paolina, but they face opposition from the Duke of Ferrara, whose intentions are far from honorable. The narrative follows their movements from the Italian coast to the festivities of Venice, maintaining a focus on the tension between their social ambitions and the threat posed by the vengeful Duke.
Readers frequently highlight the fast-paced nature of the narrative, which prioritizes romantic intrigue and social maneuvering over complex character introspection. Discussion often centers on the classic tropes of the genre, specifically the dynamic between the protective mentor figure and the vulnerable heroine. Critics note that the atmospheric setting of Venice serves as a backdrop for the escalating conflict with the antagonist. The balance of the story leans heavily toward the external challenges of the courtship process rather than internal character development. Many readers appreciate the straightforward structure and the consistent tone maintained throughout the pursuit.
